Miso Scallion Pork Meatballs

Meatballs are my go-to for a quick weeknight meal because they’re so easy to make and always come out delicious! These miso and scallion meatballs are made with pork mince but will also work great with beef or chicken. They’re succulent, full of flavour, and glazed in a delicious umami miso sauce.

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound (450g) pork mince

  • 4 scallions

  • 3/4 cup plain breadcrumbs

  • 1 tsp miso paste

  • 1 egg

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

For the sauce:

  • 1 tsp miso

  • 1 tbsp mirin

  • 1/4 cup water

Method:

  1. Start by washing and finely slicing the scallions.

  2. Place all of the ingredients for the meatballs into a large bowl. Use your hands to mix everything together really well.

  3. Roll out your meatballs between your hands. They should all be equal in size so that they cook evenly (I make mine using about 2 tablespoons of mixture).

  4. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat, then add in your meatballs. Cook in batches if your pan is not large enough to avoid overcrowding.

  5. Fry each side of the meatballs until they become a lovely golden colour (about 10 minutes in total).

  6. In a cup, mix the miso, mirin, and water for the sauce.

  7. Lower the heat, then add the sauce to the pan and scrape any brown bits from the pan into the sauce for flavour. Cover with a lid and allow the meatballs to simmer for 10 minutes, turning halfway.

  8. Serve hot, drizzle the sauce from the pan over the meatballs, and garnish with sliced scallions (optional). Enjoy!
